Summer Greetings!
Posted about 6 years ago
Summer greetings OC NAPNAP members,
As we get ready to celebrate our Independence Day, reflect on the freedoms we have. Many around the world are not so fortunate. We indeed have much to celebrate. And of course, there is always room for improvement. Maybe we cannot change the world, but we can do our part to improve access to healthcare, promote physical and mental well being and keep our communities safe.
Along those themes, here are some announcements I would like to share.
1. We had our final educational meeting of the year on 6/12/19 learning from Margery Arnold, Ph D about the impact Adverse Childhood Events (ACES) have on the structure and function of our brain and future risks for chronic or serious illness into adulthood.. A very enlightening talk. If you want to learn more, she suggested the following books and media:
The Deepest Well by Nadine Burke Harris and Childhood Disrupted by Donna Jackson Nakazawa.
There is also a video clip called "Resilience" which can be viewed on the Western Youth Services website.
A documentary called "Paper Tigers" https://kpjrfilms.co/paper-tigers/about-the-film/ which appears to be available on Netflix.
Screening tools exist to help identify and intervene to reduce life long effects.
2. Our Board is planning for the coming year. We are still looking for a President and President-Elect. If you have an inkling of wanting to be more involved (NOT a big time commitment by any means), please join us at our Board meeting on Wednesday, August 28, 6pm at a location to be determined in Irvine. We work as a team and will mentor and welcome new energy. Students, new grads, this is a great way to network and share your talents. And, we aren't getting any younger. Why is that? Call or text Judi at 714-609-2176 if you want more info.
3. With the ongoing refugee crisis, opportunities for volunteering exist. One of the pediatricians I work with started volunteering through Refugee Health Alliance. https://refugeehealthalliance.org She says some of the greatest needs are for Ex Lax Chocolate squares, individual packets of Miralax and chewable forms of kids vitamins. She is also soliciting donations of light-weight children's toys. If you would like to donate any items, you can contact Judi Leonard at Dougleonard@netzero.net

A belief in the health and dignity of every individual In response to multiple communities escaping violence, poverty, and discrimination, the Refugee Health Alliance (RHA) was created to help mobilize Southern California providers and their networks down to the Tijuana/San Diego international border to aid in the refugee crisis.
